Internet Safety Month

June is National Internet Safety Month! Internet Safety Month was created for organizations and government entities to come together to promote safe online behavior and habits. There are a lot of things you can do to help protect yourself when you’re online. Read on for more information!

Here are some useful tips to help keep you safe:

  • Change your passwords frequently – some sites don’t require you to update your passwords at a given time frame, so you may want to consider updating them yourself.
  • Set up multifactor authentication so if the computer isn’t recognized the site will email or text you a code to confirm it is you.
  • Use strong passwords – avoid birthdays, anniversaries, pet names or other personal information.
  • Make sure any shopping sites are secure – look for https in the start of the URL and not just http.
  • Do not click on unfamiliar links in emails.
  • Do not open emails or messages from an unknown source.
  • Whenever possible you should use the built-in biometrics of your device for authentication.
  • Spread internet safety knowledge to friends and family!

Internet Safety for Kids:

Now that the internet is such a big influence in today’s world, there are more and more children and teens using the internet and social media daily. Staying safe online is one of the most important things for the younger generation. It is good to be aware of what platforms your kids are using and who they are connecting with. Consider using parental controls, having them use avatars for gaming and other sites rather than real photos, and educating them on safe internet usage. When used safely, the internet can be a fun and educational place!
